LetterBoxd Recap: June!

Here's what I watched in the month of June!

Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
”Human beings have no more right to safety or liberty than any other creature on the planet."

If you said to yourself, I don’t care about any criticism regarding this movie. I’m here to have a good time, and watch a dinosaur movie. Well, you’d be highly mistaken because there were hardly any dinosaurs in this movie. I had this notion that we were going to see a scenario where humans were forced to survive in a world overrun with our resurrected reptilian foes, but there are hardly any dinosaurs shown. The only thing that made this film interesting was the return of Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neil and Laura Dern. Without the nostalgic crowd pleasers from the original Jurassic Park trilogy, I think this film would have been unwatchable.

Lightyear (2022)
”He’s going to have sad eyes. You know I can’t handle sad eyes!."

Originally, I wasn’t excited about Lightyear, but decided to see it in the movie theater despite my reservations. Ironically, this is one of my favorite movies of the year! I love the concept of watching the same film that made Andy fall in love with Buzz Lightyear. You understand more why Buzz was such a prized toy for Andy. Also, can we talk about Sox? So adorable! I don’t get all the bad reviews this movie has gotten. Everyone’s a movie critic nowadays with their pretentious, rambling reviews with big words that don’t actually say anything coherent. It’s a Disney/Pixar film mostly aimed at children, it’s not that deep bro…

Mad God (2021)
I was very curious about this movie because I love stop motion horror–themed films. I wasn’t aware this movie was in the works until a month before its release on Shudder. Apparently, Phil Tippett has been working on Mad God, on and off, for about 20 years now. The film is beautifully grotesque with its purid and sadistic elements. This film never eases up on the horror factor. However, I found it hard to follow exactly what was going on in this film as there is no dialogue to help you along. The story doesn’t do much to capture my attention, and I found myself drifting off to lala land thinking about all the things I needed to complete on my to-do list, which is not a good sign. It seems criminal to give this feature anything lower than 5 out 5 stars for the amount of effort and time it took to bring this artistic vision to life, but I’d be disingenuous to say I loved this film.

TV Shows/Documentaries

Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)

”You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker. I did.”

I have mixed feelings about Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show is not of the same caliber as The Mandalorian, but there are good aspects to the series. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen returning to their respective roles was quite impactful and, in some ways, emotional. Let’s be real, the only reason I watched this series was for my fan service of Darth Vader, and to watch the anticipated showdown between the former Master and Padawan. It was powerful to see Obi-Wan come to terms with the death of Anakin, and truly see that Vader was all that remained of his former student. I will admit, I’m disappointed in how watered down Darth Vader is as I presume we will never see his true violent nature on screen since Disney will always cater to the kids watching Star Wars. On another note, Star Wars fans are insufferable shitheads like always… don’t review a show if you didn’t even watch the entire series yet. Also, try not to accuse Disney of gaslighting you into being some racist when fans are quite literally being racist towards cast members. Fans have been doing this for a very long time now… It’s quite embarrassing to have Ewan McGregor ask you not to be such hateful assholes in the kindest way possible.
