New Camera, Who Dis?

One of my goals for this year was to buy an actual camera because I wanted to explore the realm of photography and learn how to properly edit a photo. I also wanted the option of having more professional-like photos of myself on adventures so that I didn’t have to always rely on other photographers. It’s funny, my best friends and I started out as models behind the camera. Now, we’ve all made the jump to investing in some type of camera for various reasons. I was inspired by content creators online, and their ability to capture images on their own or in partnership with their significant other. They can just pick up a camera and go, and I want to be able to do that too.

It’s great when your creative endeavors cross paths with your partner too. Danny has a creative eye, and I’m very thankful for it. I knew I picked a real one, and that he was going to be great at taking photos of me. This sounds so vain, but I just like doing shoots lol. It’s nice when your partner is genuinely excited to take photos of you, and truly cares about crafting the perfect shot for you. I never felt that type of love and value before in a relationship, and it’s really refreshing.

My initial criteria for a camera was a beginner friendly mirrorless body with an affordable price point. It came down to the Canon EOS M50 Mark II or the Sony Alpha ZV-E10 with both including an interchangeable 16-50mm lens. I was originally intrigued by the Canon because it came in white. I asked Danny to help me do research on cameras because of my impulsive nature to choose electronics based on aesthetics and colors alone. I only wanted Sony Vaios laptops when I was in college because they came in pink. I always choose the white iPhone regardless if you’ll see the color based on my phone case choice. I bought a new MacBook Air last year because I saw they came in rose gold. Do you see a pattern here? I knew Danny would be the more sensible one.

After doing some research, Danny introduced Sony as an option. He told me it came in white as well, so I could now focus on the specs of the camera and not fixate on the color options. LOL. Firstly, I wanted a mirrorless camera because they are more technically advanced and the way forward. They also tend to be smaller and more lightweight than DSLRs, which makes it easier to travel with and carry to places like Disney. Overall, Sony won the battle, which I had a feeling it would. I’ve heard many of my photography friends talk about how great Sony cameras are, and they seem to be overtaking legacy brands like Canon and Nikon in the photography arena. The main winning factors of the Sony Alpha ZV-E10 were its 4K video capabilities and its wide-range of compatible lens. We are able to use both Sony and Sigma lens on this camera.

I’m excited for all the images we’re going to capture on our future trips to Disneyland, Vancouver and Alaska. I’m even eager to document our adventures in Brooklyn and elsewhere in the city. I have so many ideas for Halloween outfits that I’m panicking realizing spooky season is finally upon us! I’m hoping I can learn from Danny on how to take better photos too, and not be so timid. Due to my social anxiety, I am very self-conscious of taking photos of people. My social anxiety makes me feel like I’m being incredibly judged by others, while my perfectionism shames me for, well, not being perfect. I know, in time, it just takes practice. For now, I’m looking forward to seeing the world in a more creative light
