Barbarian (2022)
I knew nothing about this film when I walked into the movie theater. The horror community told me this was a must see film, and so I listened. I went into this experience completely blind, even though the trailer turned out to be quite vague. The first half of Barbarian is initially frightening since I had no idea where this movie was going. Secret rooms and passageways in the basement of an Airbnb located in an abandoned neighborhood of Detroit… yeah, no. The second half of the film is where this movie lost me. Yes, the story is creative and something I haven’t quite seen in horror yet, but it just doesn’t land for me. It very much reminds me of the movie Malignant. They’re both batshit crazy horror films that I really don’t care for. I did, however, appreciate Justin Long in this film. He was hilarious! I laughed to myself due to his antics during several moments of Barbarian where the mood was tense.
Pearl (2022)
I was very excited when I found out a prequel was being released just a few short months after X premiered. I really enjoyed X for the creative slasher that it was, so I was curious to see Mia Goth return for this role. I had NO IDEA she was playing dual characters in X the entire movie LOL, and thus, I was initially confused as to why she was playing a younger version of Pearl.
Pearl is a different type of horror film from its successor, but manages to compliment X perfectly. It is more of a psychological horror that allows us a deep dive into the character that is Pearl. This film doesn’t have the same blood and gore as its slasher companion does, but it is still intriguing nonetheless. Mia Goth completely carried this film on her shoulders, and she did it wonderfully. Her monologue at the end of the film is iconic to say the least. I also loved the stylistic approach as the film is very reminiscent of the Golden Age of Hollywood. This film is as if The Wizard of Oz and Texas Chainsaw Massacre were perfectly blended together. It’s funny because, as a child, I was obsessed with The Wizard of Oz and would later on grow into a horror fanatic who loves films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I’m ecstatic for the sequel’s release hopefully in the near future!
Pinocchio (2022)
This quote totally makes sense because it seems like nobody at Disney questioned whether it was a good idea to release this film on Disney+. I cannot begin to tell you how bad this live action version of Pinocchio is. I am beyond speechless. This was the worst film of the year by a landslide. And if you look on Letterboxd, you’ll rarely see a rating above 1.5 out 5 stars. Why did Disney even make this movie?

Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist (2022)
I had never heard of this story before, and after watching this, I don’t understand why this story was such a big deal in the media. So this college football player was catfished, did it need to be national headlines? Our media is such a joke. Was there nothing else to report on in 2013? The people who broke this story are complete assholes. They don’t even seem to know the gravity of what they did to this poor man. Journalists are so arrogant in thinking everything needs to be a story. It doesn’t. It was no one’s business except for Manti Te'o and his family. Did you really need to ruin this man’s potential football career over this?
Also the person who catfished him… have you never heard of ghosting? LOL. She went on this elaborate scheme pretending to be multiple people to convince Manti that her catfish persona was DEAD. WHAT?! She seemed to have no remorse for what she did. Like it was just another day in the park. You really need a serious mental evaluation if you’re capable of doing that to someone. Manti Te’o seemed like a great guy, and wasn’t a first round draft pick for the NFL like he was expected to be because of this person’s scam.
