Letterboxd Recap: October!

Here's what I watched in the month of October!

Terrifier 2 (2022)
”Drop on by the clown café.”

I cannot tell you how long I have waited for Terrifier 2 to come out. If you know me, you know my favorite horror genre are slasher films, especially those with an iconic horror villain. I grew up on 80’s slashers like Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Child’s Play. It’s been a very long time since horror fans have encountered a fresh new villain on screen. The last horror icon moviegoers were introduced to was Ghostface in Scream. So, when Art the Clown showed up on my Netflix screen with that devious smile, I was instantly hooked. This was my superbowl. I’m not exaggerating when I say the premiere for this film was the most exciting media event for me this entire year. When I leave the house on a work night to watch a three-hour film, then you know it’s serious.

I’ve watched this movie 4 times already, and I LOVE IT. This is probably the most disgusting horror film I've seen so far, which is a bold statement for an avid horror fan like me. Damien Leone took Terrifier, and multiplied the shock factor by 10. Despite how hilarious I find Art the Clown, he truly is the most brutal killer to step foot in a slasher film. Leone’s special effects background leads to some of the most gruesome, and creative kills I’ve ever seen on screen. The original Terrifer film often garners criticism for being just a bloodbath without a solid plot line or origin story for Art the Clown. The film was basically 90 minutes of Art tormenting whoever he came in contact with on Halloween night after his initial fixation of lead character Tara Heyes. While I thoroughly enjoyed the first installment of Terrifier, I do love that the sequel provides an interesting storyline that is still a bit mysterious and vague when it comes to Art’s origin. This film also introduces our first final girl of the Terrifier series, and I have to say Sienna is one of the best I’ve seen in horror in quite some time. I loved Lauren LaVera’s performance in this film, and I hope she comes back for future films. This was genuinely the first time we saw anyone stand up to and protest against Art the Clown’s sick activity. I think their final showdown at the end of the film was one of the highlights of this story. I have to say the premiere of Terrifier 2 has been the most excited I’ve been for a horror film for quite some time. Art the Clown has officially crossed over to a horror icon in my book. He truly rivals Michael Myers for my favorite horror villain of all time, and that is saying A LOT for a diehard Halloween fan like me.

Halloween Ends (2022)
"I’ve said goodbye to my boogeyman, but the truth is, evil doesn’t die. It changes shape.”

As a new horror villain rises, the old one fades away. I was hoping after the disaster that was Halloween Kills that the final installment would pull this trilogy together, and end on a conclusive note. I was wrong. Their Halloween campaign had everyone believing that this would be Lauren Strode and Micheal Myers’ final showdown. Instead, this film decided to go off the rails. I can appreciate filmmakers going in a different direction, and not following the same old formula, but this film didn’t feel cohesive with the first two installments. I thought the mantle was being passed from Michael Myers to Corey Cunningham throughout the movie. That a new Michael Myers would rise. However, Corey Cunningham just met his demise at the hands of his “mentor.” So, what was the point of this storyline? Micheal Myers was barely in this film, and the final fight between Strode and Myers wasn’t great. Filmmakers want me to believe that Lauren Strode can now easily overcome a weak and feeble Michael Myers. Why was he so weak from the events that happened four years ago? He’s supposed to be this unstoppable, evil force. While I want to praise the storyline’s unique approach, I wish they had just followed the same formulaic plot with a satisfying end to the Myers-Strode saga.

Honorable Mentions

Corpse Bride (2005)
- I finally watched Corpse Bride for the first time ever, and I’m not a fan. The songs in this film aren’t as memorable or catchy in comparison to The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Hell House LLC (2015) - I rewatched the only found footage horror movie that actually scares me. I also love that this movie follows the mock documentary style.

Hellraiser (2022) - I appreciate that this reboot actually explains the lament configuration, and that you get to see the Cenobites for more than a few minutes. Also, shoutout to the female Pinhead.

Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) - I didn’t watch Hocus Pocus much as a kid so I have little nostalgia for it, but I did enjoy this sequel even if I do prefer the original.

Orphan: First Kill (2022) - This was actually a decent horror film. I honestly didn’t think a sequel to Orphan was going to work 13 years later, considering Isabelle Fuhrman was now a 25 year old woman. Damn, did filmmakers fool me.

Turning Red (2022) - What a cute film! I honestly don’t know why Karens were making this film so controversial… watching a preteen girl entering puberty scares you?! Get a grip lol.

Wendell & Wild (2022) - One of my favorite films of the year! I loved the aesthetic, storyline and rock soundtrack!

Werewolf by Night (2022) - I may be too desensitized, but everyone seemed to be beaming about how gory this was for a Marvel film… I disagree lol.
