Danny and I attended Brooklyn Comic-Con this past weekend for the first time. I wasn't aware the convention had legitimate wrestling, but lo and behold, there was the ring as soon as we walked in. The convention was at Major R Owens Wellness Center near Prospect Park this year. The center is a modern structure with ample natural light and is spacious enough for a convention layout. Thankfully, the event wasn't crowded on Sunday, and I felt comfortable all day there.
I haven’t been to a comic con in a long time, probably since 2018, when I last went to NYCC. Since then, I'd only been to Monster-Mania. I spent most of the day watching wrestling, which was fun, documenting Danny as he ran around the ring. Remarkable Wrestling ran the first two shows, 26 Riots and BKCC Cosplay Wrestling.
I was intrigued by Amity LaVey because she came out to metal music and looked like Harley Quinn. She has a pink belt and is the Women’s Champion in Remarkable Wrestling. Amity was also Chucky in the cosplay wrestling show, which solidified her as my favorite wrestler of the day. Chucky’s fierce opponent was Gogu, a rather strange and expected foe. The cosplay wrestling show had no business being as entertaining as it was. Batman vs The Joker. Mario and Luigi vs Bowser and Wario. Michael Jackson vs Prince.
The last show was run by Battle Club Pro, an all-women wrestling show called Women Crush Wednesday 4. I always say this, but I'm glad to see the days of tall, skinny, tan blondes as the only options in women’s wrestling in the past. Back when I was a teenager, there wasn't real wrestling between women, except for the matches between Trish Stratus and Lita. It was mainly stupid shit like degrading bra and panty matches that were only showcased for men. I’m glad we get to see women of all body types wrestling with all different tropes of personalities now—strong women with natural talent. It’s refreshing to see these women embrace their bodies and wrestle. I respect it so much. We all have cellulite, stretch marks, and jiggly thighs. We don’t need to hide our perceived flaws anymore. We can stop being so perfect.
Besides wrestling, we roamed the small convention floor to check out the booths. The convention also offered a comic con's main highlights, like panels, cosplayers, video game tournaments, local artists, and comic creators. I discovered Jac Designs. The designer has cute stickers, pins, and keychains of horror characters. Their Gizmo and Gremlin pins caught my attention at first. I can’t tell you how much I spent, and I might buy more online. Seeing everyone in their costumes reminds me of my cosplay days. I used to put in so much effort. Nowadays, I can't bother going to a con in cosplay. I keep telling myself I'll redo old costumes. Given my skills and resources, my hair and makeup would look much better now, but I can’t be bothered. Maybe my cosplay days are far behind me.
I appreciate the red carpet BKCC background they had for photos. It was probably more for cosplayers, but I had a cute outfit featuring my Uncle Art the Clown shirt from Terror Threads. Ironically, a girl asked me what I was cosplaying as… I’m just cosplaying myself, LOL. After all these years, I’m still getting asked that when I’m not even trying.
